Summary
Crossing Guard (Traffic Supervisor)
The Town of Needham is seeking qualified individuals to fill multiple part-time Crossing Guard (Traffic Supervisor) roles. Reporting to the Police Department's Community Service Officer, the Crossing Guard will direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure the safety of school children and the safe, orderly flow of vehicular traffic. These part-time duties are performed during the 10-month school year from September to June. Crossing Guards will be trained by the Community Service Officer in Massachusetts Traffic Laws related to traffic control, pedestrian safety, school zones, and other related laws and regulations. This position is roughly five (5) - ten (10) hours per week with the approximate schedule of 7:00-8:30 am & 2:00-3:00 pm, Monday-Friday.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure that children and members of the public who may be present at the location during the assignment use the proper crossing locations and that no child or individual is in the street while traffic is moving.
- Be alert for present or potential traffic hazards in the area surrounding the assigned crossing. As applicable, submit a written report to the Safety Officer of any such hazards including recommendations for remedial steps to be taken.
- May be assigned to monitor areas and issue tickets for observed parking violations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One (1) to three (3) years of work experience, preferably working with the public.
- Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation.
- Demonstrated punctuality, reliability, and dependability.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to display good judgement and respond quickly to emergencies.
