APPOINTMENTS FROM THE PART-TIME POOL ARE TEMPORARY AND OFTEN MADE JUST PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACADEMIC TERM, APPLICANTS MUST BE AVAILABLE ON VERY SHORT NOTICE.JOURNALISM DEPARTMENT - PART-TIME LECTURER POOL. The Journalism Department, College of Liberal Arts, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking applications for a pool of part-time lecturers. Positions are available as determined by need and funding during Fall and/or Spring semesters of the 2026 - 2027 academic year, which begins August 17, 2026. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate news reporting and editing, multimedia and digital journalism, videography, visual communication, feature writing, radio and TV broadcasting, advertising, public relations, multicultural journalism and media law courses.
Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
• Lecturer A: $5,507-$6,677
• Lecturer B: $6,221-$13,224
• Lecturer C: $6,825-$14,523
• Lecturer D: $8,593-$15,221

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related discipline; extensive professional media or public relations experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree and previous college teaching experience preferred.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Journalism Department in the College of Liberal Arts offers a professional degree program that allies practice with theory leading to a B.S. in Journalism. Graduates are prepared for careers in digital, print and broadcast journalism as well as public relations and media innovation. Journalism graduates also enter such fields as social media management, television production, advertising, marketing, law and public administration. Journalism students run the campus newspaper and its website and social and mobile platforms, operate the FM radio and TV stations and direct a public relations agency.
