Job Description

St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is looking for an Engineer for our Traffic and Transportation department.

The Engineer is responsible for providing technical analysis related to Traffic and Transportation operations, as well as new public and commercial infrastructure development and signalization for St. Johns County.

The Engineer’s duties include but are not limited to:

  • Gathers data, through research, field observations and interview to capture vehicle-generated traffic data in order to enable safer roadways and enhanced mobility within St. Johns County. Maintains various performance metrics for signal warrants, sight distances, speed zoning, pedestrian crossings, school zones, traffic calming, vehicle/pedestrian volume, turning movement, crash data, among others.
  • Prepares evaluations, assessments, studies, forecast models and related analyses and reports.
  • Develops scopes of services and project outcomes for vehicle and roadway operation initiatives, to include transportation studies, continuing or outside consultant contracts, grants and other related capital projects.
  • Assists Risk Management with insurance claims related to repair and replacement of traffic operation devices.
  • Coordinates technical reviews of infrastructure plans with County employees from Growth Management or other departments, transportation professionals and outside agencies to assess and resolve capacity issues and productivity improvements, ensure legal conformity and incorporate transversal issues.
  • Prepares and reviews maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans for projects involving road closures, lane closures, and detour routes.
  • Assists with developing Intermodal strategies that involve extensions to or linkages with existing infrastructure. Collaborates with Traffic and Transportation Division leaders to propose and refine processes and technical transportation management methods. Shares development and innovation strategies to foster technological advances and improved system capabilities.
  • Responds to citizen and inter-agency inquiries regarding traffic regulations, traffic control device standards, and requests for installations of traffic control devices.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field required.
  • One to three years of experience preferred. Related internship preferred.
  • Must obtain and maintain Certification as Engineer Intern or Engineer in Training within one year of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
