Monterey County Health Department's Behavioral Health Bureau seeks experienced behavioral health professionals to fill a number of vacancies at the Senior Psychiatric Social Worker level. The Bureau has Senior Psychiatric Social Worker vacancies on the Clinics Team, Placement Team, Crisis Team, Adult Forensic Services, Juvenile Court Team, Monterey County School District Team, Avanza Transition Age Youth Team, and the Quality Improvement Team.

Adult System of Care
The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker on the Clinics Team will oversee specialty services to high risk populations such as older adults/medically intensive, high-risk co-occurring substance abuse, post-hospital engagement team, clients with personality disorders who frequent acute hospitals and facilitating transitions from locked facilities. Additionally the Senior Psychiatric Social Worker will serve as a team leader working closely with team supervisors to facilitate coordination of services, provide team support to developing competency with evidence based practices and assist with utilization review.

The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker on the Placement Team will be part of a team of clinicians that facilitate placement into, and discharge from, a continuum of residential facilities throughout the state for adults with serious mental illness. The team monitors treatment within these facilities utilizing strength-based case management and psycho-social rehabilitation to support the individual's wellness, recovery and resiliency goals to achieve a better life in the community.

The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker on the Adult Forensic Services Team will work as part of the AB109 collaborative multidisciplinary team. The position will be based at the Adult Probation Department in Salinas. Primary functions of the job include triage, psychosocial and substance abuse assessments, treatment planning, referral, individual counseling, case management and evidence based group treatment.  The overall goal is to reduce recidivism for participants returning from state prisons to the community, those charged with 1170H offenses and high risk felony probationers. The position provides opportunities to work with a wide range of partners to promote successful reintegration experiences for participants into the community.

Crisis Team
The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker on the Crisis Team works in the Emergency Department of Natividad Medical Center, assessing and diagnosing patients, having collateral contact with client caregivers to collect information and providing psycho-education, providing referrals to clients and families and responding to crisis phone calls. 

Children's System of Care
The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker will work closely with the Juvenile Court and the Probation Department. This position is responsible for the Suicide Evaluation Watch (SEW), referrals for medication evaluations with a client's psychiatrist, meeting requests made by the Juvenile Court, and collaborating with Probation staff assigned to Juvenile Hall.

Senior Psychiatric Social Workers will work closely with Monterey County School Districts, SELPA and Special Education Services. These positions will be responsible for mental health services within the schools for both IEP and non-IEP (General Education) students, participation in student IEP meetings, collaboration with district PBIS and ISF teams, risk assessments and the request of school personnel, referrals for medication and evaluations with psychiatrists, and providing clinical support to Psychiatric Social Worker I & II staff on their team.

The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker position on the Avanza Transition Age Youth team works with youth and young adults with serious mental illness, and their families. This position serves as a liaison with the in-patient unit at Natividad Medical Center and coordinates outpatient care for clients exiting the unit. The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker wll function as lead clinician, supporting crisis/stabilization efforts and coordinating with the Mental Health Units at Natividad Medical Center and the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, and providing clinical services in South Monterey County.

Quality Improvement
The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker vacancy on the Quality Improvement team supports the utilization review for specialty mental health services and evaluates the quality of care delivered. This Senior Psychiatric Social Worker would be expected to use in-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements for specialty mental health and substance use disorder services and utilization reviews to determine the compliance of documentation with federal, state and local regulations, including Medi-Cal billing.

Examples of Experience/Education/Training Conditions of Employment :
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record or ability to provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority
  • The Health Department will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which include a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
  • In accordance with HIPAA, incumbent must have applied for or have a National Provider Identifier (NPI)
Pursuant to Section 5751 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, possession of any one of the following:
  • Possession of a current Licensure either as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or a License as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or a License as a Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D) from the State of California issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners.
