Summary

Salary range: $45,000.00–$64,200.00. This range includes State Supplemental Pay for employees who are P.O.S.T. Level I certified. Additional pay differentials are available for college education, military service, and prior law enforcement experience.JOB SUMMARY The “K-9 Deputy” is teamed with a canine to produce a two-member, specially trained, law enforcement unit which functions to provide search, tracking, criminal apprehension, and crowd control capabilities in the performance of a variety of basic law enforcement duties during assigned 12-hour night shifts.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Solely responsible for the handling and management of assigned canine in the performance of law enforcement duties and activitiesPerform weekly training with canine in the appropriate responses to commands required in conducting building searches, area searches, narcotics searches, tracking, criminal apprehension, and crowd controlMaintain training logs pertaining to weekly trainingsPerform maintenance activities of the kennel by cleaning the housing area; clean and oil leashes, harnesses, and collarsFeed and provide all other care for assigned canine including making sure the animal is properly groomed; wash, brush, and trim animals coat to clean and improve appearanceInspect the canine to check for diseases, illness, and injury; ensure proper medical treatment is providedBring the canine to the authorized veterinarian for annual and/or routine examinations, inoculations, etc.Proficient with Central Square (digital records management system) and all databases utilized by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's OfficePatrol assigned areas to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and arrest violatorsInvestigate illegal or suspicious activities of persons; quell disturbances, and arrest law violatorsOperate radio to receive instructions and notify superiors of work efforts in progressComplete detailed reports regarding all crimes and other incidents where a response by the K-9 Deputy has occurredPreserve crime scenes until superiors and investigators arriveMaintain weapons and equipment in functional and clean conditionCollect, secure, and properly transport all evidence to assigned locationPromptly and accurately serve and/or deliver warrants and other official papers, as instructedConduct security checks of property, businesses, and buildingsObserve and question suspicious persons and complete field interview worksheets for intelligence gathering purposesADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Cooperate with efforts of other law enforcement agencies in conducting investigations/operations and joint law enforcement effortsAssist in providing warnings to the general public before, during, and after emergencies/disasters; assist in the facilitation of public evacuation effortsPerform the duties of a “Deputy”SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
